I'm back and ready for action!

I have Avatars #54 up for you all to finally see. As some of you may already know, I have been away for my wedding and honeymoon. This is why I have taken time off of Avatars. It didn't seem appropriate to spend my evenings out on the island drawing cartoons while Janis sits and watches tv waiting for me. But now that I'm back I expect to catch up on the number of strips I missed, since none of our readers submitted any guest strips. The plan is to have average 3 strips each two weeks for eight weeks. As far as I recall, I think I'm behind by 4 strips. As soon as I'm back to zero I will return to my weekly post on Thursdays. Also, keep checking in for more Hera.

Oh, also, Mark's Travelling with Magi 2 has been moved.

Keeping Jason from overshadowing me, at any cost!

You've probably noticed by now that Jason didn't have an Avatars up this week.

That was mostly my fault. I drew his attention to something that might help us out, putting steam in our little locomotive here at Magi.

There's a little grant being offered by the Edmonton Arts Council, available to individual artists. There are actually several, so in theory we could each apply for one and have hopes of being successful. I've been working on my application, he's been working on his. They're both pretty close to being done, which is good because we've got three more days to have them in.

If you would like to nominate either of us, you go right ahead. Success in this might speed up the creation of HMB t-shirts. And you know you want those.

Of course, if you'd like to pre-order, at $20 a shirt, we'd be happy to start production the moment our costs are covered. All it would take is 25 people, and we could get things going. To express your interest, email me. We could save a lot of people S&H by delivering them in person at the U of A or something.

But if what you really want is closure, I have the conclusion of Travelling with Magi II ready for you. If you prefer to read the whole thing, use this link.

And if you would like to see an example of what will constitute our bread and butter, visit smithmusic.ca. We made that website, and we'll be making many more. If your business could use the competitive edge of a professionally designed website, look no further.

Not rain nor wind nor horrific computer failure...

I remember it being a lot easier to make updates using code alone. Man, it's been so long since I've taken such a long look at our HTML... anyway, our new business website should be up just as soon as the gears finish turning, metaphorically speaking. I'm really glad I'm the writer. All I have to do is dig through the code until I find some reference point, then copy and paste whatever I've written. I could learn to build a whole webpage without the design software, but at this point I haven't yet.

For me, using that software is like having a construction team working for me, a small group of tiny little people in the computer who take my instructions, like, "put my picture right there above the speech balloon," and they know everything that's involved with that. There's like, twenty five lines of code involved in that before I even write anything.

My computer has had some kind of cyber-stroke, and it no longer feels I need access to my design software. And so, as I said, really glad all I've got to do is open up Jason's pre-formed code, copy and paste, then edit where applicable. Look how well it works for a casual update!

From the ashes I rise...

Wow. It's been awhile. It may be possible to update from within the code, but I really don't like it. Every single time, it's like rooting my nose around down there until I find a truffle.

We press on, here at Magi, with a venture that'll help to maintain a healthy economy. We are an excellent tool for small businesses, whether they be starting out or going strong. And Alberta needs that right now, to help keep itself above water.

That's right, we're the water wings of the provincial economy.

And just to keep things light, I'd love to see some fan art of that truffle image.

My New Years Resolution is to never have to make another New Years Resolution again.

If Kelsey Grammer and Dennis Hopper were campaigning against each other for presidency of the USA who would you vote for? On the one hand Kelsey Grammer had a long career playing the psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane on Cheers and Frasier. On the other hand Dennis Hopper was the bad guy in Speed. Grammer did an excellent portrayal of the X-Man, Beast. But Dennis Hopper was the bad guy in Speed. However, Sideshow Bob is one of my favorite characters in The Simpsons. That may just be enough to make the decision.

But then again... Dennis Hopper was the bad guy in Speed...

Hey, you know what would probably totally trick me into falling for one of those fraud scams, and convince me to send money to some dork in England or possibly Taiwan?

If they sent me some primer cash. That would totally sell me on the whole "I'm a Narluvian prince who wants to make you rich" scheme. Or another tenant scam. Paypal me some money, and I'll fall for it, I promise.

Cash works too.

No, my resolution last year was to not make one last year.

I failed.

What I meant by this year's resolution is that there are some goals I would like to achieve, but I don't want to be specific about it. That way I'm not jinxing them. I've never made a resolution that I've succeeded at, so I started making ones that I knew I'd break for sure. Like, "I resolve not to make a resolution." I fail just by making it. This year, I know I'll fail, but at least I might have more drive to work at all my many goals.

The Professional News:

Magi Creations is a fully functional business. We now offer not only custom website design, tailored from scratch to the needs and identity of the client, we also offer freelance writing, editing, graphic design, illustration, and expert consultation on the art of telling the story, be it truth or fiction, action or drama, short or long, narrative, graphic novel, movie...

I'm currently working on a feature I think I could see in Reader's Digest, much to the delight of the retired gentleman who came to me.

Where do you want your story to go?

Making it.

Wow. It's been well over a month since the last Avatars update. I'm not ashamed, though. I've been busy designing websites, business cards, and learning Java Script. But Avatars #60 is done and ready to read. Also, I've rebuilt the Avatars Mainpage.

Where are my rocket boots? Now knife kick. KNIFE KICK!

I thought Vega was supposed to be a "pretty" man. I've got nothing against the guy who played him, I'm not saying he was ugly, but he was not the kind of soft-featured pretty-boy who'd wear a mask just to avoid getting his face hurt.

If you're going to do a fireball attack in a movie that otherwise seems, visually, to be based in reality, you can't be so obvious with it. You need to have the sensei ringing specific gongs from across the room, and the student not seeing what I will generalize here as the hadokens. As Jason said, it is a distance punch, not an ultimate move.

The Chun Li Monologues were very wooden. She sounded very much like she was reading off the page, which she probably was. The director should have tried some different things with her in the recording studio. She's in distinguished company: Tom Hanks was also wooden. But you know what? They found ways to deal with it. And it's documented! The director could have just googled it! Instead, he allowed the whole thing to have the same wooden feel.

As for Bison's back-story, I'm going to repeat myself: the movie, at least visually, is reality-based. If you want to bridge the gap between the realistic and the fantastical, you can't just plant something supernatural on the screen and say, "Believe this." The back-story should have been shown in muted colours, should have had just a little more build-up before he suddenly had a wife (two sentences would have done it) and that cave should have taken longer. It's okay to have a little action and acting in between the narrator's lines, and I think the characters reacting to the unusual--and to the audience, quite visible--colours of the cave. I'd have gone with some subtle misty neons, myself. Purple, mainly, with some green.

You can laugh about any combination of the comments in that last paragraph, but I am quite serious, and when I've stretched my directorial muscles, I'll show you that I know what I'm talking about.

Jason could forgive Charlie and Maya for their choppy comic-book style dialogue, but I just couldn't. The rest of the dialogue felt much more natural, at least within the world of the movie. They just didn't fit. A little less startled epiphany in every scene, a little more calm reasoning, please.

All of that said, I agree that the movie was better than my expectations, but I thought that those details that were mishandled were significant, (monologue, anti-climactic Vega battle, fireball, Spinning Bird Kick) and it was the director's folly to let them slip through.

7/10

It wasn't treated like a novelty, like Van Damme's movie. I was 13. I enjoyed the game. I was offended by the movie. I can still imagine director Steven E. de Souza saying, "Eh, they're kids. Show'em all the characters, and some unrealistic video game moves, and they'll be happy. What do you think about rockets on Bison's boots? Kids like rockets, right?"

Street Fighter!!

Now, we all remember my rant almost a year ago about the new Street Fighter movie, right? Well, I've seen it now. And I'm glad to say, it was not disappointing. They took a few liberties with the story, but nothing inexcusable. I give it an 8.5/10. And here is why:

First of all, the fireball was lame. They put too much focus on it when she finally used it in combat. In my opinion, she shouldn't have learned it from Gen, who, incidentally, doesn't have a fireball in the games. She should have learned it in a later movie during the Street Fighter II storyline after experiencing some of the other character's moves. Gen's role in her training should only have been to help her gain focus, tap into her chi for better reflexes and speed. The blind fighting was cool though.

Second, some of the action was handled poorly. One example of this was the use of the Spinning Bird Kick, Chun Li's upside-down spinning kick attack. Again, too much emphasis on it and it looked hokey. It should have happened faster so that you had to kind of do a double take and then go, "Oh, cool, it was that move!" The second example is the fight between Chun Li and Vega. It was too short and somewhat anti-climactic.

Aside from these two things, it was an excellent movie. The casting was very good and they didn't suffer from the problem (as if there was only one) that the Van Damme movie had where they HAD to have all of the Street Fighter II characters. This movie only had Chun Li, Charlie Nash, Gen, Balrog (played by Michael Clarke Duncan), Vega, and Bison in the main cast. Also, I've read that the character Maya in the movie is supposed to be Crimson Viper from Street Fighter 4.

I loved that they gave Bison a back story. He never really had one for the games. It made his evilness make more sense and therefore added to the general intimidation factor. He was well played.
For how cool his first scene was, they didn't give Vega enough exposure.
The dialogue between Charlie and Maya was kinda campy and comic-booky, but I overlooked it because it seemed somehow to fit the Charlie character.
Ryu and Ken, the main characters of the games, are not in the movie, but they do mention Ryu at the end, setting up for a sequel.

So, I loved the movie. 10/10
Lame Fireball brings it to 9/10.
And the weak Vega fight and Spinning Bird Kick brings it to 8.5/10.

Goldenrod is for Coma Fantasies.

Time has come for Avatars #61. I know you have been on the edge of your seat, checking out our website everyday, hoping and praying that its would be there. At least, that's how it looks in my head.

Want the bunnies?

So it's time to make good on a promise. The Homicidal Mutant Bunnies are returning, this time in shirt form. This'll make good on a couple of promises, really. The big question for you guys is, "What the heck is he talking about?"

If you'd like to get in on the ground floor, be the first to get one, you're out of luck. The first is already spoken for. Ah, the magic that is pre-orders!

But does it stop there? Heck no! See, our t-shirts aren't just going to be sold here, they'll also be available in stores! Not the big stores, mind you, the type that have pharmacies in them, our shirts will be sold in stores that don't use the term, head office.

So if you were a fan of the HMBs, whether you first saw them online, in a college paper, or way back before they had established themselves in our humble ranks, you can look forward to ordering them from our new store online, or go to an independent store in Edmonton and ask if they carry the Homicidal Mutant Bunnies. (When they look at you funny, tell them to come to our website and contact me if they're interested.)

"This will work. But if it doesn't, we won't survive to care."

Avatars #62. I'm now ready to move onto #63. And as soon as that one is done, I'll work on #64. But then I'll throw a curve-ball and skip to #66. After that, I think I'll take a crack at redoing #26.

April 30, 2009
I can't tell if I'm crazy or clever.

I'm not actually planning to redo Avatars #26. And now with the uploading of #63. I'm one step closer to being back on schedule with regards to Avatars. Sorry about all those broken links in the last update, by the way.

Happy Birthday, Megs

No, we're not dead here at Magi. We were just contracted to produce something, and we've just finished. We've got two other such projects due in mid June.

We do good work
, so if you want us to make you something too, just let us know.

Our time is short, and our quest yet long!

Jason's on his way across the country now, to visit with some family that he hasn't seen since he got married.

That leaves me in charge of the shop, while he's gone... not that he's my boss or anything, I just have the total freedom now of doing anything I want without having to explain myself to anyone!

So... Now, uh... I guess I'll... have dinner.

Everybody go check out From Within Studio!

Error. Does not computer.

So my Internet Explorer just quit working. I can no longer use IE to access the internet. Been trying to figure out how to make it start working again, but I don't think that's likely to happen any time soon. I've downloaded and re-installed the damn thing, and it's still doing exactly the same thing: Cannot display webpage.

So I did what anybody would do when they're out of ideas: I tried to reach tech support. But I don't want to call any of the four phone numbers they offer on their website for this region, nor do I want to call long distance for any of the others. I wanted to email them. In order to do that, however, they want me to log in.

Log in to what!? They want me to sign up for the privilege of having my products actually work? I'm not reloading my operating system for this, I've got too much stuff on my computer that's not important enough to save, and a pain in the ass to reload afterward.

Maybe when I buy a new computer, one that isn't a pitiful excuse for a piece of equipment owned and operated by a website design team... Well, at least I don't need IE to do my job.

June 28, 2009
Ok, ok! Stop pestering me Mark.

We here at Magi Creations have been busy over the past month. Beginning of June we produced and uploaded the From Within Studio website. Then I was on vacation for a week and a half in Ontario on a farm where I had very limited access to the internet. But I still managed to get a major update to the Smith Music site done and build Roy Custom Guitars entirely the week after I returned home. Unfortunately this means that there is no new Hera or Avatars this month.

Ok, so I lied. Avatars #64 is up.
Sorry, Tylor. It's not in color yet.

July 8 , 2009
Need to work on my aim. I was trying to pester Tylor.

Did a lot of hunting, trying to find the best place to have t-shirts printed. Found a place that had quality shirts, that would provide them at a decent price, and, I swear it was a coincidence, I had a coupon for that would have saved me a couple hundred dollars off the first printing.

We carefully selected the images, which ones would be in the first run, and the second, all the way to the fifth. Then Jason used all his imagician tricks to improve the quality of the images, make them sharper and cleaner.

This was all done during moments when we weren't working on Roycustomguitars.com, fromwithinstudio.com, and smithmusic.com, as well as my truly kick-ass proposal.

Oh, did I forget to mention?

I'M GETTING MARRIED! A big thanks goes out to my Magi buddies for making it possible to pull off such an ambitious proposal, all while keeping her totally unaware of all that was going on around her. It took a lot of careful planning as well as some quick and clever thinking by the people who were involved, to keep it secret for so long.

Now that I've pulled it off, I get to relax. Or work on guest lists and venues and menus and dances and speeches and now that I can play the piano, I'm actually writing songs, and let's not forget the clientele, still have to deliver for them.

You know what vacation is like? I don't think I'll even remember until some time next year.

Oh, wait. We'll have to add finding another t-shirt place to the list, because while we were taking care of all that other stuff, the place we had selected went out of business.

At least we hadn't paid and then not received our merchandise.

Aug 4, 2009
No updates from me in July, apparently.

Wow. It's been well over a month since my last update. Bad me. BAD! Ow... Well, I finally found some time, so I guess I can announce the triumphant return of AVATARS! with strip #65. (ok, I admit, "triumphant" may be slightly overselling it.)

Aug 9, 2009
War is Ugly.

I don't have much to say tonight. This is the shortest gap between Avatars updates we've had in a long dang time.

August 20, 2009
What does the inside of a light bulb look like?

Magi Creations continues to soldier on. We're serving new clientele these days, in addition to our established clients. It's pretty cool. It's what we spend our time doing these days, hence the sparse Avatars updates.

There are some projects such as Animal Feed, and the general content of the R&R section of this website, that have been put on hold while we've been taking care of our clientele.

But I can't blame paying jobs for my hiatus from the Final Fantasy Villians review. What I blame for that is FFV. I played through that game in a week, right after writing the FFIV review, and it sucked all my enthusiasm right out. Playing it while actually paying attention to little things like plot and character development was such a repugnant experience, I was stuck on how to approach it. I came up with a map of the game--several maps, actually--and I used flash to animate the thing, so that I could show you exactly how mind-numbingly stupid and pointless the whole thing was, and then right when I gave it the "save" command, the program crashed. Sans save.

I can only assume that my computer had an allergic reaction to so much stupidity. It's a good thing I never managed to put it up on the website, I might have brought down our entire fanbase. That's, like, six computers!

No, actually we were getting pretty good numbers on this website before our Avatars drought. We still have a pretty decent-sized viewership, and to everyone still watching, thanks for coming back from time to time. I promise, we'll have plenty of new material for you in the coming weeks and months. If you want to help support our efforts, buy yourself some cool HMB products. And let us know if there's anything else you think we should be selling.

But in other interesting news, our website apparently holds the rank of #6,219,662 in the world. Since there are more than 25 million websites in the world, that puts us somewhere at or better than the 76th percentile. Go us! Just imagine what would happen if we were doing this full time. Seriously, buy something.

As a matter of fact, buy a website! We're now serving a number of tradesmen, and I'm looking forward to a meeting with a salon owner pretty soon. We've also come to the point where we can serve people anywhere in the world, and give them the same level of service and satisfaction as the clients we serve face-to-face. So if you're in California, Australia, Scotland, or anywhere else in the world, and you need any or all of the many services involved in building quality websites, drop us a line!
