Happy Birthday, Dad.

I logged into my Deviant Art account to look at stuff and manage things and I found that one of my sketches had been listed under another member's favorites. Now, this is not really news to me. Things get favorited frequently. In fact, people have marked some of the Avatars strips that I've put there as favorites. But I found that this particular piece was listed under a category that this member entitled, "Worst Sh*t I've Ever Seen."
My first impulse was to send him a nasty message on his main page calling him a prick and defending my piece (it was drawn about 8 or so years ago and was a rough sketch.) I ignored said impulse and decided I'd leave a message saying. "Thanks for the constructive criticism." with the sarcastic emoticon.
As my computer and internet is slow the member's main page had just finished loading by the time I finished these thoughts. I was half disappointed half delighted to find that this member had already been banned from deviant art.

Why do people always take it personally when I say, "I hate Bono and U2."

I keep hearing rumors that a new Street Fighter movie is being made. I've yet to see solid confirmation about it, but I hear it is supposed to be based around Chun Li this time. All I can say is that they would be utterly foolish to have it attached in any way to the god-awful Van Damme one. Actually, that isn't all I have to say. I have three (more) main things to say about it.
1.) Either take the base story and do a more realistic direction of it, or completely fudge physics and make every action scene over-the-top and absurd. The latter would be preferred as most Street Fighter fans (myself included) would be highly disappointed with the former. When I say over-the-top and absurd I, of course, mean high paced, mostly CG'd, martial arts done it a way that makes us comfortable suspending our disbelief. Unrealistically high jumping should not have too much attention brought to it. Have the characters jump 7 feet into the air and land before the viewer has time to think, "But that's impossible!" Every attack or action should be seamless and striking. Even a punch to the face should create a screen flash and send gobs of sweat and/or blood flying in all directions. HIGH IMPACT SOUND EFFECTS!!
2.) The characters' signature moves should not be the central focus of the fights. They should not always be used as a finishing attack but should simply be part of the characters' menu of attacks. Have Guile combo with a punch, kick, uppercut, up-side-down kick, summersault, then have Zangief get up right away and punch him in the gut, drop kick him, then suplex him. Also, the Hadoken is not the most powerful and deadly art. It is just a punch for when your opponent is outside of punching range. Which brings me to-
3.) Characters should never yell out the names of their attacks. This may be cool in anime or video games, but in an American action/martial arts movie it's just tacky. Okay, so there may be exceptions. For instance I could see Ken calling out "Shouryuken!" when he's trying to be showy, cuz that's just what the character is like. And Zangief, who is trying to gain a name for his motherland, might even say the moves to create a greater impact. He is a wrestler and probably kind of a showman.
Street Fighter is my bread and water (in the video game area of life) and I would hate to see anyone mess it up again. I hope the makers of this new movie see this and realize that if they screw it up I will be very very mad at them. I may even cry a little. It would be like if I came over to you and spat on your sandwich and then made you eat it. Yes, I am implying that I will be forced to see this movie. I can't not see it. It's Street Fighter.

I'm Back
|
 |
|
 |

Hello. I feel I've made good use of my time off from Avatars. The website we're making isn't quite finished, but it will be within the next couple of weeks, I imagine. The guest comic by Rhys Cavanaugh has been taken down because it was the only guest strip I received and alone it felt like it interrupts the flow of the Avatars strips as a whole. So, thanks for the strip, Rhys, and next time I need guest strips I may put it back up if you have more and if more people submit their own guest strips as well.
Now that I'm back onto my regular update schedule, here's this week's Avatars. There will be another next week, and as a bonus for your patients while I took that last 4 weeks off, I will upload any extras that I draw as they get done.
And on a final note:
STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP.

Indestructible...
|
 |

I predict that Disturbed will tank on their next album. I don't mean that their sales or popularity will drop, I mean that they will lose me as a fan. The new album, Indestructible, did not blow me away from track one like all three of their preceding albums. The Sickness, Believe, and Ten Thousand Fists were each progressively better than the last and then this new one took at least two steps backwards.
The thing about Indestructible is that they've gone formulaic. They took what worked for the majority of fans (in 'Stricken') and cloned it over and over. First time listening through there were only two songs that stood out with me, one of which is already being played 100 times a day on the radio. I was almost ready to write off the whole album as a failure when it occurred to me that I had similar, though not as strong, feelings the first time listening to the second album, but after listening to it a few more times, the songs became more familiar and therefore more enjoyable. Today I consider it to be the second best of their albums.
When Ten Thousand Fists came out I was utterly floored by its intensity and energy. It left me wanting more. Eventually I found two more tracks that weren't on any of the albums so far, Welcome Burden, and This Moment. Two more great successes in my opinion, however they got my hopes up for a fourth album, leaving me disappointed when it came out.
I've listened to it a couple more times since I bought it, but it still isn't wowing me like the others did. Disturbed, I'm giving you one more chance. Please do something more edgy and original for your next disk.
Also, Avatars #47, late from last week, is finally up. Our other project is finished, so I will have more time for now. There will be another Avatars later this week.

There we go. That's what we've been working on, the destination of that link by my faceless eyeballs up there. Turns out we're not too bad at the stuff we intend to do for a living. Go figure, eh?
Tylor said the Smith Music website looked more professional then ours, which we all took rather personally, so we're gonna make another one for us, from which to run our business stuff. It'll be different in that I won't use words like gonna, and stuff.
In the meantime, since there's nowhere else where we give him credit until that's ready, Rene Hebert was the one we subcontracted to get the pricing page coded all spiffy-like.
Oh, and spiffy-like. Won't use that one there either. |

Hey, out there.
Mark, the Magi Wordsmith here. Still alive, and still encouraging people to link to the new Smith Music website.
Too much going on over here to remember. The main news is that we're currently building a new Magi Creations website, sans hyphen, for the more professional side of Magi Creations. From the services we've provided people, there's been enough positive feedback to convince us that we can safely launch Magi into a full-time career.
Don't worry, though. Even though we'll be earning our living through website design, as well as all the wordsmithing and graphic creation, we don't intend to leave you guys hanging. Avatars will continue, and we may even get to some of our shelved cartoon projects before the Earth dries into a giant scorched peach pit.
There are just two things that we need to get done first:
1. Magicreations.ca, which is the business suit to this website's comfy sweater, and
2. Jason's wedding. Yeah, we're gonna make sure he's all married and stuff. That seems kind of important to him, so we'll make sure it goes off smoothly.
And by smoothly, I mean I will personally stand on a mountaintop and blow the rainclouds away.
And by mountaintop, I mean table, and by rainclouds I mean silverware, and by away I mean at the staff, and by blow...
You get the idea.
Update: Janis never did get me those chips, but I have been sufficiently bribed to ensure that all members of the wedding party that I am personally responsible for will be there and properly dressed.
